International Student Course Registration Tutorial

All new undergraduate students need to read this tutorial and complete the questionnaire at least 4 weeks before International Student Orientation (sooner is better). You must complete the following tutorial prior to meeting with an academic advisor and registering for classes.

  1. How will I register for classes and how will I know what classes to register for?
  2. Do I have to know what my Major is before I register for classes?
  3. What are course prerequisites?
  4. Do I have to take math and English placement exams?
  5. What does a typical schedule look like?
  6. What do I need to know if I’m considering being an Edgewood Eagle Student Athlete?
  7. What is the Honors Program and am I eligible to apply?

1. How will I register for classes and how will I know what classes to register for?

You will meet virtually with an academic advisor prior to your arrival to campus.  Your academic advisor will help you determine which classes you should take.   Academic advisors are well prepared to advise students in all areas of study at Edgewood College.

At the end of this tutorial, you will complete a questionnaire. Your academic advisor will use that information to contact you and schedule a virtual advising appointment.

After you have registered for classes, you can purchase books and other course materials.  There is a link to the bookstore information at the end of the tutorial.

2. Do I have to know what my major is before registering for classes?

Absolutely not! If you do, that’s fine. If you don’t, that’s fine too. You will be encouraged to explore Edgewood College’s majors during your first year. You may have some major area of study in mind, however, there is a chance you are not familiar with some of the majors Edgewood College offers. We want you to take some time during your first year to discover what we offer and determine which program best suits your academic goals. You won’t do this alone; our Advising Program is designed to provide you with structure and support throughout this process.

Note: If you decide to change the major that is currently listed on your I-20 or DS-2019, you will need to inform the Center for Global Education of the change so they can update your SEVIS record with the new major.

3. What are course prerequisites?

A course prerequisite is any class you need to complete before taking another course. This ensures you have a solid base of knowledge and skills in certain classes prior to registering for them.

For example, SPAN 101: First Semester Spanish is the prerequisite for SPAN 102: Second Semester Spanish.

Not all courses have prerequisites; your academic advisor will assist you in knowing how to identify which courses do.

4. Do I have to take Math and English placement exams?

English Placement:  You will not need to take an English placement exam.

Math Placement:
Most degree-seeking international students need to take a math placement exam.
These exams are used to determine which math course matches your current skill level. This is required information for your course registration. If you need to take a math placement exam, you will receive an email from success@edgewood.edu to help you prepare.

Non-degree exchange students do not need to take placement exams.

If you need to take the math placement exam:

  • Carefully read the email you receive from success@edgewood.edu.
  • Create an online account (instructions will be in the email) and take a practice exam from home. The practice exam must be completed before you take the proctored exam.
  • Take the proctored placement exam on the assigned date.

5. What does a typical schedule look like?

Class schedules will vary depending on individual needs and goals of each student. A first semester schedule usually consists of 14-16 credits (typically 4 or 5 classes). Generally students will take a COR 1 class, English, math, or oral communication, and one other class (possibly in a major that you are considering).

COR is a general education requirement unique to Edgewood College where students have the opportunity to connect learning, beliefs, and action while examining relevant human issues from multiple perspectives.

6. What do I need to know if I’m considering being an Edgewood Eagle student athlete?

If you are interested in participating in an athletics team at Edgewood College, please fill out our survey, and a coach will get back to you.

7. What is the Honors Program and am I eligible to apply?

If you are seeking academic challenge beyond normal course offerings, you’ll want to participate in the Honors Program. A student completing the requirements of the Honors Program is designated a “Graduate of the Honors Program” on his or her diploma and transcript. By participating, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Receive priority registration.
  • Travel and participate in Honors-only activities paid for by the program. Recent examples include: A trip to the GLEAM art exhibit at Olbrich Botanical Gardens, lectures and cultural experiences at UW-Madison, an excursion to the Overture Center for the Arts, volunteering at the Second Harvest Food Bank, completing a “city as text” exploration of the Capitol Square.
  • Be recognized as a “Graduate of the Honors Program” on your diploma and by wearing of honors cords at commencement.
  • Get an edge on the future by developing your intellectual potential.
  • Enhance your preparation for admission to graduate school or finding a job.
