Director of Athletics
DESCRIPTION OF JOB:
This position reports directly to the Vice President Financial Affairs/CFO. The position is responsible for the direct oversight of the NCAA Division III Athletics Department, of 21 intercollegiate teams, the Esports program, a staff of approximately 60, approximately 350 student-athletes, the College’s Fitness Center, and intramural program.
The position will be responsible for short and long term Athletic Department planning that supports the College’s Mission and Vision; oversight of department budgets, oversight of NCAA, conference and institutional rules compliance; department fundraising; and cultivating positive relationships in the department, with the student body, with the College’s faculty/staff, and with the Madison and surrounding communities.
Responsibilities:
Department Oversight:
- Plan and implement department initiatives that align with the College Mission and Vision
- Develop collaborative and effective partnerships with various campus stakeholders to optimize and ensure success in the recruitment and retention of student-athletes, marketing of the athletics department’s successes and initiatives, and their engagement as alumni
- Develop department reports for various partners and College groups
- Maintain financial viability of the department
- Develop and implement short and long-term plans for department growth
- Represent the department and Edgewood College with the NACC, NCAA and other governing organizations
- Prepare and submit all required reports including federal and NCAA Reports
- Foster and grow comradery and teamwork among all teams and team personnel
- Ensure an exceptional experience for all student-athletes, both athletically and academically
Personnel Supervision:
- Oversee the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of coaches and staff and delegate specific responsibilities to ensure the efficient and productive operation of all department administrative and operational functions. Serve as the point person for departmental communication and ongoing mentorship and supervision of coaches, staff, and student-athletes.
- Educate all department personnel in NCAA, conference and Institutional rules/regulations
- Identify and facilitate (as needed) ongoing staff education/professional development opportunities
- Set job responsibilities to meet the needs of the department, student-athletes, and the College community
Budget Supervision:
- Oversee and approve allocation, and modifications (as needed) to department and team budgets, including operating and booster budgets
- Increase booster budget funds in conjunction with Institutional Advancement Office
- Develop and foster additional revenue opportunities for the Department
- Provide final approval of all expenditures with Purchasing, Receiving, Accounts Payable, and Foundation offices
Compliance Oversight:
- Review and approve NCAA and conference membership records and reports
- Keep a current working knowledge of NCAA and conference regulations
- Ensure the education of all members of the department (staff and student-athletes) on NCAA and conference regulations rules and regulations, and oversee adherence to them
- Ensure the education and oversight of all Athletics Department constituents (parents, boosters and other supporters) on those rules and regulations
Community Outreach and External Relations:
- Develop and foster community relationships that benefit the department and College
- Facilitate department involvement that is beneficial to community organizations and individuals
- Expand department’s supporters, boosters and “ownership” groups
- Develop, foster and maintain practice and competition venue relationships for all sports needing off campus facilities
- Facilitate and encourage campus and community involvement by athletic staff and student-athletes
- Negotiate agreements with outside vendors and potential partners
- Finalize external contracts/agreements
- Finalize facility rentals
- Execute changes to existing contracts/agreements
- Educate Athletics Department staff on external relationships and contracts/agreements
- Represent Edgewood College through partnership work with the NACC, NCAA and community organizations and fundraising functions
- Involvement in various campus committees / organizations
- Provide final approval travel requests outside of normal team schedules
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Necessary Education or Work Experience:
- 4 years of experience within an Intercollegiate Athletic Department (required)
- Bachelor’s degree (required); Master’s Degree (desired)
- Experience in an academic environment (desired)
- 4 years of college coaching experience or 8 years of high school coaching experience (preferred)
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge and acceptance of the NCAA III Philosophy
- Attention to detail
- Computer skills – Microsoft Office and administrative database
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Time management skills
- Familiarity with academic policies, procedures, and services
- Understanding of general coaching philosophies and team management
