DESCRIPTION OF JOB:     

The Dean is responsible for providing vision and leadership for the development and operation of the Henry Predolin School of Health Sciences. The Dean reports to the Provost.

Responsibilities:

Academic responsibilities

  • Articulates a leadership vision and strategic plan for academic programs and curriculum in collaboration with the Provost and the Henry Predolin School of Health Sciences faculty, staff, and students.
  • Enhances the quality of the current programs in the School, including providing oversight of assessment and program evaluation of academic programs and services, and provides visionary leadership and support in the development of new programs.
  • Reviews and approves all curricular offerings and programs of study within the School in collaboration with heads of academic units, other Deans, and curricular committees.
  • Provides innovative leadership for faculty in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service .

Governance responsibilities

  • Serves as the School’s primary representative with administration and with other Schools and constituent governing units.
  • Works collaboratively with other Schools to support educational preparation in a variety of fields of study.
  • Represents the School on policy-making bodies as directed by the Provost and defined by by-laws.
  • Facilitates implementation of the mission and values of the institution.

Development responsibilities

  • Provides leadership in the acquisition of resources from public and private sources.
  • Oversees grant and development activities/opportunities on behalf of the School.
  • Interacts with alumni to raise funds and enhance the reputation of the institution.

Finance responsibilities

  • Coordinates budget preparation and allocates resources to all programs within the Henry Predolin School of Health Sciences.
  • Establishes priorities in the allocation of available resources in the School.
  • Manages all fiscal and operational decisions affecting personnel, materials, and equipment in the School.

Personnel responsibilities

  • Strengthens and promotes efforts to attract and retain a highly qualified and diverse population of faculty, staff and students.
  • Oversees and recommends approval of the recruitment and employment of academic and administrative personnel in the School.
  • Responsible for the oversight of faculty orientation in the School.
  • Oversees evaluation of faculty and forwards recommendations to the Provost and committee designated as responsible for promotion and tenure decisions.
  • Oversees annual staff evaluation process.
  • Facilitates faculty and staff development efforts.

Community responsibilities

  • Serves on institutional committees and external committees and boards as appropriate.
  • Represents the School and institution with professional and academic groups at local, state, and with national levels.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Necessary Education or Work Experience:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree.
  • Distinguished record of leadership that demonstrates a commitment to academic excellence.
  • Demonstrated success in working and interacting with diverse populations.
  • Experience in supervising personnel.
  • Possess exemplary public and interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through collaborative decision-making and ability to work effectively with internal and external constituents.

Preferred:

  • Distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and service in higher education.
  • Successful record of leadership and accomplishment in areas such as: strategic planning; faculty leadership and personnel administration; budget development and management; curriculum design and development; administration of exemplary academic programs with success in improving educational outcomes and student retention.
  • Experience integrating communication, technology, and information resources into teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrate a successful record of external fundraising, grant writing, and grant management.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent oral/written communication skills
  • Knowledge of state/federal standards and practices in higher education (FERPA, etc.)

Preferred Technology Skills:

  • Computer proficiency (MS Word, Excel, etc.)
