Art

About

The Edgewood College Art Department offers opportunities for all students to engage in the study and practice of visual art and design. Majors and minors will be prepared for careers, continued study, civic engagement, and lifelong practice. Our students and faculty are fostered and developed by Gold LEED certified studios and resources in The Stream, including green studio practices and the Edgewood College Gallery. Visual art majors include multiple areas for skill development: art and design, art education, art history, art therapy, graphic design, and web design. Our mission is to develop students’ creativity, aesthetic awareness, technical skills, capacity for visual thinking, and imagination. We promote risk taking, courage and patience to align these skills with the college mission to build a resilient, just and more compassionate world.

Biological Sciences

About

The Mission of the Edgewood College Biological Sciences Department is to prepare all students to be well-informed students and leaders in a world that is increasingly shaped by science and technology. Based on Sinsinawa Dominican values, we aim to instill in all our students an understanding of, and a life-long enthusiasm for, the process of scientific discovery and a commitment to the responsible application of science. We are committed to innovation and excellence in our programs and to preparing our majors to be successful in science-related careers that are vital for meeting future local, national and global needs.

Computing and Information Sciences

About

We see our mission in instilling in our students critical thinking and love for life-long learning of Information Technology as a powerful tool of ethically solving problems of humanity. Multiple concentrations of CIS and CIS/BUS majors are designed to provide students with solid grounding in computer information systems as well as business, and prepare students for direct entry into the workforce as computer information systems professionals in the roles of data analysts, software engineers, cyber security and network administrators, web and mobile developers, agile information systems engineers and IT project managers, or to give them strong foundation for further graduate study in computer science.

Social Science—Criminal Justice, Economics, Political Science & Sociology

About

The Social Science Department offers coursework in diverse programs with majors in Criminal Justice, Economics, Political Science and Sociology

The Department’s mission is to provide an opportunity for students to learn about the historical development of economic, social, political and cultural institutions and gain insight into the underlying assumptions, conflicts and political strategies involved in changing those structures. Students pursuing a degree in the Social Sciences will understand the influence of and the intersection among various social realms, such as politics, science, religion and technology. They are challenged to a critical reflection on the local and global structuring of relationships with respect to race, class, gender, and other social categories.

Environmental Sciences and Environmental Studies

About

The Environmental Studies and Environmental Science Programs offer majors that combine coursework from departments across the curriculum with involvement in the local and global community to gain a broad interdisciplinary perspective on environmental issues and the experience necessary to work toward a sustainable future.  Students who wish to pursue a major in Environmental Studies or Environmental Science should contact the program director or advisor to plan your program.

History

About

History programs may be used to fulfill the college’s graduation requirements, obtain teacher certification, or prepare for professional (e.g., law school) or graduate school study. In consultation with a History Department advisor, a student will select the most appropriate program and courses to meet the requirements for a major, minor, or concentration in History.

The Department of History has identified three broad goals for the student majoring in History or Broad Field Social Studies that will be assessed on an ongoing basis, particularly in the senior research project.

Music

About

The curricula for the music majors are aligned with the standards of the National Association of Schools of Music and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The comprehensive degree offerings challenge students to reach their highest potential. Developing performing skills, critical thinking, and music literacy are goals of each area of private and class instruction, music appreciation, music theory, music history, and performing ensembles. Each semester, the music faculty assesses student achievement using standard test formats, portfolio reviews, rubrics, and juried performance reviews.

Religious Studies

About

Rooted in the Catholic and Dominican traditions where “faith seeks understanding,” Religious Studies at Edgewood College employs academic inquiry, scholarly research, experiential learning, and intellectual reflection to examine the religious experience and its multiple expressions. In so doing, we develop our critical intellectual capacities, expand our understanding of ourselves and our world, deepen our own spiritualties and commitments, and cultivate genuine respect and appreciation for the truths and values expressed in the traditions and spiritualties of others.

Theatre Arts

About

Edgewood College Theatre presents an annual season of productions for the students, the college community and the greater community of Madison. We rotate our offerings to provide a wide range of theatrical experiences, time periods, genres, voices and lenses for both our students and our audiences.

These productions create an educational and artistic environment that nurtures creativity, academic integrity and professionalism. The productions also serve as the context in which classroom and studio work combine with performance as we collaboratively share our vision and ideas with the community, our audiences.

We strive to give students hands on opportunities to learn theatre by doing theatre–both onstage and behind the scenes, to practice green theatre techniques by leaving a light footprint on the earth, to serve the students we have at the highest level while always seeking to enrich the diversity of our talent pool, artists and theatrical offerings, and to uphold the Sinsinawa Dominican values and mission to serve.
