Balancing business in today’s world

Bringing balance to a business or organization requires attention to detail, analytical and communication skills. Professionals in accounting provide the insight and understanding to ensure that businesses are run efficiently and effectively, accurate records are kept, invoices are paid on time, and cash flows are utilized efficiently. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, you will explore the practical side of the field by attending events with accounting professionals, completing projects in accounting software programs, and gaining real world experience through internships in the field.

As an accounting professional you may also offer budget analysis, financial planning, consolidation reporting, due diligence for acquisitions and mergers, consulting services, and more. Accountants and auditors need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting; however, many choose to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. Students that aspire to sit for the CPA exam can enroll in Edgewood College’s Master of Accountancy degree program. Earn your graduate degree in one year while acquiring the additional 30 credits required to qualify for a CPA license in the state of Wisconsin.

Finance

With a finance concentration you will be able to work in the areas of finance, business, investment banking, and consulting.

Management

Specializing in management opens up a multitude of career opportunities across diverse industries, such as cost management and financial forecasting. This concentration can lead to roles like cost accountant, budgeting or financial analyst, and data analyst.

Marketing

As a student with a marketing concentration, you will augment your accounting degree with marketing knowledge including consumer behavior, marketing principles, and management.

Business 385 Cost Accounting

In addition to providing data used to cost products and services, cost accounting provides data to managers for planning and controlling. Today cost accountants are increasingly expected to actively contribute in the making of strategic decisions instead of simply providing data. Cost accounting is a managerial tool used by businesses to formulate strategy and its implementation. The course’s focus I upon how accounting information can assist managers in controlling the activities for which they are responsible, and how manager’s use cost information to make better decisions to improve their organization’s competitiveness. The course covers the fundamentals of cost accounting, including costing systems, cost-volume-profit analysis, and budget creation and review. Particular emphasis is given to current practices in cost control through reports to management.

Business 481 Auditing

Principles of auditing and the audit process. The course describes the foundation for the role of the independent auditor in the global economy, professional standards, planning the audit and designing audit programs, audit working papers, auditing specific financial statement categories, auditors’ reports, and professional ethics.

Business 485 Income Tax Accounting I

Tax laws and regulations related to individual taxpayers and the principles of taxation common to all taxpayers (i.e. individuals, partnerships, and corporations.

The Career Development program in the Department of Business is embedded in the core curriculum. Throughout the program, you will engage in key career development activities, including informational interviews, job shadowing, team-based internships, and individual internships.
