Grants and Loans
Grants
Most grants are awarded based on your and your family’s financial need and do not need to be repaid. Grants are available through the federal and state aid programs, as well as Edgewood College. Common grants include Pell Grants and the Wisconsin Grant.
Loans
Loans are also based on your family’s income and need level. By borrowing money, you may be able to cover tuition as well as books and living expenses. You can apply for both federal and private loans and find the options with repayment plans that make sense for you.
Institutional Financial Aid
Edgewood College Grant: An institutional grant awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. This grant does not need to be repaid.
Federal Pell Grant
A federally funded need-based grant awarded to undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree and who have exceptional need.
Federal Direct Loan
A low interest student loan that must be repaid. Repayment begins six months after you graduate, leave school, or drop below part-time status. There are two types:
- Subsidized – awarded based on financial need. You are not responsible for interest while enrolled at least part-time
- Unsubsidized – awarded to students regardless of financial need. You are responsible for interest that accrues during the life of the loan.
Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
A federally funded need-based grant awarded to undergraduate students, with priority given to Pell Grant recipients.
Federal Plus Loan
Available to parents of dependent undergraduate students who are enrolled at least part-time. The PLUS Loan is a loan program that allows a parent to fund all or a portion of any remaining balance of their child’s educational expenses. A credit check is required and the loan must be repaid.
State Financial Aid

Wisconsin Grant
Provides assistance to Wisconsin undergraduates enrolled at least 1/2 time. Awards are based on financial need and eligibility cannot exceed 10 semesters.
Wisconsin Talent Incentive Program
The Talent Incentive Program (TIP) is a state grant program designed to assist low income, disadvantaged students. The student must be a freshman to initially receive the grant. Students can be nominated for the grant through the Wisconsin Educational Opportunity Program office or the Edgewood College Financial Aid Office.
Wisconsin Division of Vocational Rehabilitation
This Wisconsin agency serves students who have any disability which presents a substantial handicap to future employment.
