Keith McCarthy, a senior Neuroscience major, recently presented his research at the Society of Neuroscience conference in Chicago. That conference is the discipline’s largest and most important event for presenting research and exchanging ideas, and attracts more than 35,000 neuroscientists from around the world.
“The conference was awesome,” Keith said. “There were so many people excited about their research and just so helpful in a multitude of ways.”
Presenting at a conference of this caliber takes a great deal of dedication, and is a remarkable accomplishment, says Brenda del Moral, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences and Co-Director of the Neuroscience program at Edgewood College.
“This project is a culmination of 1.5 years of running experiments, and Keith did an outstanding job presenting his research project at the conference,” del Moral said. “It is quite an impressive feat for an undergraduate student to present his work at a conference of primarily graduate students, postdocs, and leading researchers. Keith deserves recognition for his hard work and is a stellar example of the kinds of individualized research experiences students can have on our campus.”
Chicago’s McCormick Place, the site of this year’s event, felt like a world away from Keith’s hometown of Hudson, New Hampshire. “I had a great time, though the conference was so large and kind of overwhelming.”
Keith plans to graduate in May 2020. He is currently applying to Ph.D. programs, with an eye toward continuing his academic career next fall.
