It’s Easy to Feel Part of the Community

Under the bright lights of the Diane Ballweg Theatre stage on a cold Thursday night in January, thirty-two cast and crew members are working with David Frank, former producing artistic director of American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin. As they prepare for the February 26 opening of Bertholt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle , students are connecting with a director whose professional theatre experience helped APT become recognized as the “best classical theatre company in America” (Wall Street Journal).

The Importance of Student Involvement

On the far northeast corner of campus, a group of faculty and students is putting the idea of sustainability into reality. On a crisp November morning, Senior Environmental Science major Ben Pratscher and associate professor Tim Kuhman, along with several other students, planted roughly 1,500 garlic cloves that will be harvested in the spring and used in both dining areas on campus. The garden, mostly hidden from view by a number of trees on either side, complements the existing hoop house adjacent to Dominican Hall, which grows salad greens and spinach.

Opportunities to Get Involved

Dan Oryall ’10 has translated his student athlete experience at Edgewood College into success professionally, and then some. Oryall was a standout on the Eagle Cross Country and Track teams, and in 2010, he received his BS in Biochemistry. Shortly thereafter, he began graduate study at UW-Madison to become a Physician’s Assistant. In 2012, he began working fulltime as a General Surgery PA with Dean/St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison. Today, he competes as a triathlete. He began racing in triathlons while at the College, as a way to supplement his cross country and track training.

The Right Place, at the Right Time

A paid summer internship turns into much more for Trevon Ampe.

An Eye-Opening Experience

Associate Professor of Philosophy Lisa King experienced new and fascinating insights on a summer trip to Senegal. Through the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), King was able to join seven other educators from across the United States on a 10-day trip to the west African nation. Each morning, they listened in on lectures by local leaders and professors. In the afternoons they would travel and visit various historical sites.

“I Turned a Challenge into a Positive Thing”

Samantha Wendt’s summer internship took her to unexpected places, but she still discovered a positive and rewarding experience. Sam, a native of Oregon, Wis., interned at the Manitowoc County Domestic Violence and Sexual Resource Center, working in every aspect of the non-profit organization. Her main duty was to simply talk with clients and help them in a variety of ways.

Men’s Golf Achieves Both In and Out of the Classroom

The Edgewood College men’s golf team has placed themselves among the nation’s academically elite golf programs. So Much Left to Learn

A 10-day summer trip to Peru yielded new insights and future learning potential for student Pauline Chavez-Hemaidan and faculty member Dr. Amie Dragoo.

Independence and Confidence

Studying abroad wasn’t always part of Ashley Ligman’s college plans. “Applying…was sort of an impulsive decision, but it led to one of the best experiences of my life,” she says. In the spring of 2015, Ashley, a senior from Stevens Point, Wis., spent four months studying in Australia. Initially she wasn’t sure about spending a semester away from campus, but was sold once she discovered that she could still graduate on schedule.

A Home Away From Home at Edgewood College

I knew Edgewood College was the right choice for me as soon as I set foot on campus because it felt like “home.” This College offered me the best of both worlds with an ideal location in Madison, yet still offered all the benefits of a small school. When on my first tour, it struck me how friendly, excited, and welcoming everyone was. This tight knit community is one of the many benefits of a small campus, and it is very comforting to see familiar faces wherever you go.

It’s a ‘Beautiful Thing’ on Two Wheels

“This is my way of being able to give back, and ‘pay it forward.’ But I get just as much out of it as I put into it. It’s a beautiful thing.” Sherri Smith, a senior from Theresa, Wis., has served full-time for nearly twenty years in the Wisconsin Army National Guard.
