Taking music to the masses

You’re the one who listens to the latest music, can talk about a musician’s life, and just can’t get enough of music. Built in foundational history and theory the Edgewood College Music and Media Production major experiences music media on many different levels and genres. From jazz to Latin music to women in music, you will study the depth and breadth of music – its influences and its evolution.

In America and around the globe, the music industry adds billions of dollars to the economy and employs an astonishing number of people. Within the last decade, the global value of retail sales of recorded music alone was estimated at more than $37 billion per year. A recent economic study in Nashville reported that the local music industry there supported 56,000 jobs with an estimated labor income of $3.2 billion annually. (Nashville.gov)

Featured Courses in Music Media and Production

This course will explore the impact of geographical location, race, class, and ethnicity on the development of American popular music. Students will investigate a variety of genres and styles as well as key contributors to this music.

Music 291 – Introduction to Audio Technology

This course introduces students to the theory of and practices in digital audio recording. Describes basic background of the history of audio production, culminating in hands-on operation of a digital audio workstation. Introduces the student to industry standards and most current software and hardware. Related equipment, including microphones, outboard processers, and basic concepts of Music Theory and terms are covered. Studio definitions and nomenclature for equipment and terms used in the current professional environment will be covered.

Communication Studies 105 – Digital Life Through Multimedia

Multimedia has emerged as a common thread with which to connect individuals to the digital world. The course uses various multimedia technologies to explore everyday life, the societal impact of digitally produced resources and how the web is exploited by both individuals and organizations. Emphasis is placed on how multimedia is used for life in college and the world of work.
