Accelerated Secondary License Program

Obtain your teaching license in just one year with our accelerated licensure program in Middle/Secondary Education. If you hold a Bachelor’s degree in any of the following content areas, the Accelerated Secondary License Completion program will certify you for initial licensure in the Early Adolescence through Adolescence level:

All license completion courses are applicable to a Master's degree. Classes are cohort based so you will have the opportunity to work in partnership with other students and faculty throughout the program.

Culturally Responsive Practices

The Edgewood College value of Justice is demonstrated in courses that are designed to challenge, explore and foster the development of culturally-responsive teaching practices to educate students in diverse middle and secondary schools. Culturally responsive teaching connects students' cultural knowledge, prior experiences, and performance styles to academic knowledge and intellectual tools in ways that legitimize what students already know. Teachers who complete the Accelerated Secondary Program (ASP) become individuals who transcend their own cultural biases and preferences to establish and develop patterns for learning and communicating that engage and sustain student participation and achievement.

The following courses are required to complete the license certification. Courses are taught in an accelerated format so that you can obtain your license certification in one year.

Licensure in English as a Second Language (ESL 395) or in Bilingual Education (BILed 023) may be secured by ASP candidates through the addition of three ESL courses or four Bilingual courses. Bilingual Education (023) is a supplemental license allowing teachers to teach subjects for which they hold licenses for in two languages. ESL (395) license allows the license holder to teach the English language to English Language Learners while supporting core academic subject instruction provided by the classroom teacher at the grade or developmental level specified on the license.

Master of Arts in Education Degree Requirements

When a candidate also seeks a Master of Education degree, completion of the following courses is required, in addition to those listed in the License Requirements (33 credits total):

  • ED 603 Introduction to Educational Research
  • ED 692 Research Capstone Project

Tuition and Financial Aid

Edgewood College offers teacher license certification programs in Elementary, Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence, and Secondary Education. If you already have a Bachelor’s degree, completing our license certification programs will satisfy the requirements needed to receive your teacher’s license in Wisconsin. What’s more, you’ll work with experienced faculty leaders who offer responsive and supportive advising and are dedicated to helping you meet your individual and professional goals. We will guide you through the process of applying for your DPI license and provide assistance in helping you find a teaching position. 

Graduate tuition for the 2018-19 year (beginning Summer 2018) is $963 per credit. You can expect that cost to rise by approximately 3.5% per year in the future.

Most students complete the 27 credits required for the Middle and Secondary license in 1 year. Another 6 credits completes the Master’s degree (33 credits total). 

Based on current tuition rates, the estimated total tuition cost to complete the license requirement would be approximately $25,110. The projected total tuition cost to achieve both the license and the Master’s degree would be $30,690.

Graduate Student Financial Aid

Our admissions and financial aid counselors have worked with thousands of students who have questioned how they could afford to complete their graduate education. They will use their experience to suggest creative solutions for financing your education. We work with students and organizations to manage tuition reimbursement plans, extend tuition discounts to various corporate partners in the region, offer third party billing and monthly payment plans, and work with veterans to maximize their available aid.

Admission Requirements

  1. Provide evidence of a baccalaureate or more advanced degree from a United States regionally accredited or equivalent post-secondary institution with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale for regular admission status. The cumulative grade point average is computed on the highest degree held at the time of application to the Edgewood College graduate program.
  2. Complete and submit graduate application (including $30 fee). Priority application deadline is December 1. This application is for graduate students who want to pursue a Master’s degree, license or certificate, or take courses as a non-degree student.
  3. Request that official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate academic credits received from each post-secondary institutions you attended be sent directly to Edgewood College Graduate and Professional Studies.
  4. Provide two letters of recommendation from college or university professors, supervisors, and/or professional colleagues who can focus on the probability of your success in graduate school. Letter of Recommendation Guidelines.
  5. Submit a written statement listing the reasons why you think you will be successful in graduate school; cite how specific background experiences will aid in your success as a student.
  6. Submit passing Entrance Exam Scores prior to the start of classes. Candidates must take and pass Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (CORE) Tests (CORE Reading 5712, CORE Writing 5722, CORE Math 5732) or submit GRE, ACT or SAT scores less than ten years old. ASP candidates must take   PRAXIS II in the content area prior to admission or within the first semester.

The priority application deadline for the Accelerated Secondary Program is December 10. All required application materials should be submitted by the deadline.   Applications received after the deadline will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Transfer Credits

You may submit up to 12 semester hours of graduate credit for consideration of transfer to Edgewood College for application to a degree program. Approval of the respective department is required. To be considered for application to a degree program, a course must have been taken within the past five years. For more information about transfer credits, please contact your admissions counselor.
