Edgewood College’s Computer Information Systems (CIS) degree offers a broad-based and innovative curriculum with classes that provide opportunities for you to learn core concepts of computing, information systems development, programming, database development, networking, web development, and IT project management. This degree path equips you with the knowledge to problem-solve, refine communication, and develop strong analytical skills, preparing you for this sought-after field.
Students in this program can pursue concentrations in cybersecurity, data science, and web software development.
Within this concentration, students gain knowledge in areas such as cyber threats, cyber-exploits, network attacks, cyber terrorism, network security, and more.
The Data Science concentration provides students with the experience to identify and solve problems that will assist in improving decision-making. A variety of data analytic techniques, such as programming with Python, and SQL database management, will be covered.
Students will incorporate knowledge in website design and technology through advanced courses in programming.

Computer Systems 179 Jumpstart to Computing with Python
From driverless autonomous cars to smart homes and phones, computing is a part of our everyday lives. This course aims to kick start your computing skills using Python, which is one of the most popular programming languages when it comes to Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, data analytics and many other scientific areas of data exploration. In this course, students of all disciplines learn the foundations of Python by drawing examples from diverse areas of computing including data processing, computer graphics, etc. and enjoy logical problem solving using simple, easily described steps.
Computer Systems 270 Approaches to Database Management
This course is a fun introduction to the different traditional and modern-day approaches on database management using hands-on examples. Concepts of files, databases, data objects, and presentation of data in various formats are covered. Students learn the principles, techniques, and tools needed to create a relational database application from scratch and apply them in a group project using open source tools such as MySQL and PHP. This course also familiarizes students with the technical hands-on knowledge of NoSQL databases using MongoDB and also explores the origins and characteristics that distinguish them from traditional relational database management systems.
Computer Systems 315 Introduction to Machine Learning
In this course students will get a foundation indifferent machine learning models and algorithms. Topics may include supervised and unsupervised learning, Bayesian decision theory, neural networks, stochastic methods and cluster analysis. Students will learn how these models may solve complex real-life problems such as data mining, autonomous navigation, speech recognition, robotic control, bioinformatics, image recognition, and many others.

This organization is all about bringing ideas to life using the collective skills of its members. It is a creative space in which members can explore a multitude of mediums and skills such as web design, coding/programming, database management, digital art, and more!
The club also acts as a platform for developing growth and knowledge in the personal and professional career world associated with the computer sciences, as well as means to share inspiration and aspirations.
Computer Information System Experiences
Inclusivity in STEM and CIS
The CIS department works actively with the community, including being involved with campus computing and STEM clubs and working toward the advancement of women in computing. There has been an influx of women entering this career path, as the demand for women within the STEM field continues to grow.
Many outreach activities include faculty and student(s) co-presenting at Expanding Your Horizons (EYH), a conference organized by UW Madison to promote STEM to middle school girls. Additionally, the CIS department has hosted many coding events in Wisconsin Science Olympiad Division C.
Student Research and Development
Our practical curriculum guides your journey into this growing field through hands-on activities, interactive applications and real-life projects that sharpen your abilities to problem solve and work in teams. It incorporates community outreach and senior capstone experiences that showcase your skills for future employers.
Internship Program
Internships are an indispensable part of the CIS degree. All students are required to complete at least one internship when completing their degree. Often internships are the gateway to finding a full-time job, which many students end up getting even before they graduate. Historically, most of our graduates’ secure full-time positions within six months of degree completion. Many of our graduates attribute their employment success to the experiences gained during their internships.
Our students have worked as interns at many local companies. Potential employers for internships include companies such as Sentry Insurance, TDS Telecommunications, UW Health, Century Link, Cuna Mutual, Epic, StarTech Computing Inc., Beacon Hill Technologies, Hewlett-Packard (HP), UnityPoint Meriter Hospital, Health Grades, and Baker Tilly.
