A sensory friendly performance may involve adapting the house rules for a particular performance, adapting the audience environment, creating alternative ticketing and seating arrangements, as well as pre-theater preparatory activities for the person with a sensory, social, or learning disability so the person begins to understand and anticipate what might happen at a performing arts experience. The term “sensory friendly” is a common term for events and experiences at theaters and museums. This is the term used for this guidebook. However, some of the examples and options offered in this guidebook often extend beyond the sensory experience.

2024–2025 Theatre Season

These Shining Lives

September 25–29, 2024
Edgewood College Amphitheater

Directed by Jan Levine Thal

Based on the true story of four women who worked for the Radium Dial Company—a watch factory based in Ottawa, Illinois, These Shining Lives chronicles the strength and determination of women considered expendable in their day, and this story’s continued resonance. Catherine and her friends are dying, it’s true; but theirs is a story of survival in its most transcendent sense, as they refuse to allow the company that stole their health to kill their spirits—or endanger the lives of those who come after them.

Young Frankenstein

November 15–23, 2024
Diane Ballweg Theatre

Directed by Stephen Tabor

From the creators of the record-breaking Broadway sensation, The Producers, comes this monster new musical comedy. The comedy genius, Mel Brooks, adapts his legendarily funny film into a brilliant stage creation – Young Frankenstein! Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”) finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. “It’s alive!” he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds. Every bit as relevant to audience members who will remember the original as it will be to newcomers, Young Frankenstein has all the panache of the screen sensation with a little extra theatrical flair in this action-packed musical comedy.

John Proctor is the Villain

Feb 28–March 8, 2025
Diane Ballweg Theatre

Directed by Jeanne Leep

At a rural high school in Georgia, a group of lively teens are studying The Crucible while navigating young love, sex ed, and a few school scandals. Holding a contemporary lens to the American classic, they begin to question who is really the hero and what is the truth, discovering their own power in the process. Alternately touching and bitingly funny, this new comedy captures a generation in mid-transformation, running on pop music, optimism, and fury, writing their own coming of age story.

Our Mission Statement

Edgewood College Theatre presents an annual season of productions for the students, the college community and the greater community of Madison. We rotate our offerings to provide a wide range of theatrical experiences, time periods, genres, voices and lenses for both our students and our audiences.

These productions create an educational and artistic environment that nurtures creativity, academic integrity and professionalism. The productions also serve as the context in which classroom and studio work combine with performance as we collaboratively share our vision and ideas with the community, our audiences.

We strive to give students hands on opportunities to learn theatre by doing theatre–both onstage and behind the scenes, to practice green theatre techniques by leaving a light footprint on the earth, to serve the students we have at the highest level while always seeking to enrich the diversity of our talent pool, artists and theatrical offerings, and to uphold the Sinsinawa Dominican values and mission to serve.

These twenty-six innocent deaths, like pebbles thrown into a pond, created ripples and vibrations that were felt far beyond the initial rings. This is the story of those vibrations.

Similar in style to The Laramie Project, playwright Eric Ulloa conducted interviews with members of the community in Newtown and crafted them into an exploration of gun violence and a small town shaken by a horrific event.

First presented in 1732, this timeless comedy clearly demonstrates the ageless affinity of laughter and love. A princess driven by honest and noble goals uses a series of dishonest, but raucously funny deceptions and disguises to achieve them. Employing a variety of alter egos, and all her considerable charms, the princess quickly turns the heads and hearts of a stuffy philosopher, and his spinster sister, before restoring an unsuspecting prince to his rightful throne.

Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play

Spies, murder, love, and other trademarks of Alfred Hitchcock come to life in the style of a 1940s radio broadcast of the master of suspense’s earlier films. With The Lodger, Sabotage and The 39 Steps, Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play is a triple feature, complete with vintage commercials, that recreates a daring train chase, a serial killer’s ominous presence, and a devastating explosion through the magic of live sound effects and musical underscoring.

The Tempest
