Healthcare Simulation Specialist

This is a 60% position and is located at the Center for Healthcare Education and Simulation (CHES), a joint venture between Edgewood College, Inc, SSM St. Mary's Hospital, and UnityPoint Health Meriter. The position will collaborate with the simulation team to support educational needs of all three entities.  The position will report to CHES, located at 3001 W. Beltline Hwy., Madison, WI. The 60% schedule will vary depending on weekly class needs.

The Healthcare Simulation Specialist works under the direction of the Executive Director and guidance of the Healthcare Simulation Specialist Manager to perform educational, operational, and technical aspects of running a simulation laboratory.  Specifically, the person will plan simulation learning activities; responsibly coordinate lab resources; operate both administrative and technical tasks to effectively execute simulation sessions for internal and external clients; sell, promote, and grow the lab to internal clients and external regional clients. The specialist is responsible for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, instructors, students, staff, and visitors to the Center for Healthcare Education and Simulation (CHES).

Responsibilities

Assist with daily operation of the Simulation Lab

  • Orient instructors and students to the Simulation Lab
  • Help coordinate classroom, laboratory, and staff scheduling
  • Manage course registrations via phone, email, and website
  • Perform clerical functions related to lab management
  • Maintain a professional and safe environment

Execute Simulation Experiences

  • Collaborate with faculty and simulation instructors to create simulations that are appropriate to the learners/participants
  • Develop and deliver simulation scenarios in accordance with best practices in both education and simulation research
  • Identify and implement creative ideas to ensure simulation activities are as realistic as possible
  • Serve as a simulation operator by running simulation technology in partnership with instructors during simulation scenarios
  • Operate audio and video equipment to record simulation sessions with subsequent editing, and transfer to archival format
  • Assist directing the activities in the scenario
  • Assist participants in monitoring of safety concerns in the lab
  • Perform troubleshooting assistance with simulation operations
  • Provide technical support and advice as needed
  • Provide theatrical support and occasionally play the role of patient for appropriate simulations and/or prepare other patient actors for simulation.

Perform Pre-Simulation Activities

  • Program patient scenarios as needed
  • Assemble pre-simulation learning materials
  • Prepare scenario props
  • Create scenario moulage
  • Create supportive documentation methods for scenarios
  • Support training instructors to select scenarios and effectively facilitate simulation sessions
  • Obtain signed release/ confidentiality forms from participants
  • Set up control room for simulation activity

Perform Post-Simulation Activities

  • Operate audio and video equipment as needed for debriefing
  • Administer evaluations of simulation lab experience
  • Perform collaborative evaluation of simulation and identification of ways to improve the experience
  • Manage simulation recordings
  • Clean simulation lab rooms after use
  • Clean simulators after use, as needed
  • Clean classrooms after use

Collaborate with healthcare professionals and staff

  • Assist with scheduling and coordination of classroom and laboratory space in collaboration with other CHES staff, including entering and removing classes into and from the shared calendar and website.
  • Support lab clients in preparing for, facilitation, and debriefing of simulation to optimize the learning experience
  • Communicate with instructors about any equipment failures, weather-related changes, or events that might impact their lab sessions
  • Provide technical support and advice

Maintain Human Simulators and Lab Equipment

  • Install new software or hardware upgrades to the simulation technology and lab equipment
  • Perform operational checks on equipment, oversee scheduled maintenance and clean equipment per manufacturer recommendations to proactively maintain equipment
  • Ensure lab simulation technology and equipment is kept secure and safe
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures, consult with technical support as necessary and determine the need for vendor repair
  • Perform simulation and audio and video equipment repairs per manufacturer specifications
  • Ensure simulators are kept clean and ready to use
  • Coordinate vendor repair of equipment as required
  • Maintain an understanding and utilize as appropriate the vendor contract and equipment warranties

Manage Simulation Lab Supplies

  • Assess simulation lab supply needs
  • Organize storage of supplies
  • Track usage of supply inventory, maintain inventory and seek ways to minimize costs
  • Act as the simulation lab liaison to the supply vendors
  • Solicit supply donations as applicable
  • Manage hazardous materials per established standards

Maintain Simulation Lab Documentation

  • Develop, maintain and enforce documented lab policies and procedures
  • Develop and maintain related forms such as Confidentiality or Release Forms
  • Produce simulation orientation materials
  • Manage digital media
  • Assist in supporting the Simulation Lab website

Assist the Executive Director in the Financial Management of the Simulation Lab

  • Participate in planning and development of the lab budget.
  • Participate in preparation, timely submission, and reconciliation of budget   items, working with the Executive Director
  • Ensure appropriate utilization of lab resources and reconciliation of budget variances with the Executive Director

Assist the Executive Director in Promoting Marketing and Growth of the Simulation Lab

  • Promote simulation integration into courses
  • Produce promotional materials in collaboration with Executive Director
  • Participate with the Executive Director in community outreach programs and marketing
  • Conduct tours of the simulation lab
  • Collaborate with Executive Director to explore possible funding opportunities

Evaluation of the simulation experience

  • Obtain and monitor participants and student satisfaction with the simulation experience
  • Alter/change/adapt simulations based on feedback

Maintain Professional Development

  • Maintain competencies in technology
  • Continuously seek and apply information on best practices in simulation education
  • Attend conferences and training sessions regularly to increase and maintain knowledge related to simulation education
  • Research future simulation products

Job Qualifications

Necessary Education or Work Experience

  • Requires current registration/ certification / licensure in health discipline
  • Requires minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Nursing, with a master’s degree in nursing strongly preferred
  • Minimum of two years of clinical experience preferably with medical/surgical, critical care, pediatric, OB, ICU, EMS, or paramedic areas
  • Experience with healthcare simulations; skills laboratory; healthcare teaching preferred

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Broad understanding of computer technology and electronics as person will work with an array of technology including high-fidelity simulators, audiovisual, network and information systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint,
  • Internet and database use
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple items simultaneously
  • Work well under pressure
  • Self- motivated and require little to no supervision with the ability to work independently
  • Exemplary demonstration of professionalism, commitment, and loyalty
