Director of Career Development

Description of Job

Provide strategic vision, leadership, supervision, assessment and on-going improvement for comprehensive career and outreach services for undergraduate and graduate students and alumni. Work collaboratively with academic divisions, departments, faculty, staff, employers, students and other constituents to enhance students’ career development. Support and streamline the efforts of the college to provide more intentional career development programs for students.  Increase the number and quality of available internships and other experiential learning opportunities, and build successful partnerships with employers. 

Responsibilities

Leadership and Administration

  • Provide direction and leadership for career development initiatives
  • Engage in on-going assessment and evaluation to ensure continual improvement and provision of innovative and effective programs and services that meet the changing needs of students, alumni and employers
  • Lead, manage, and assist in training of Career Development staff, and other faculty and staff working with career and internship-related initiatives
  • Perform office administration functions; overseeing the budget, submitting reports, goal setting, etc. 
  • Participate in personal and professional development opportunities
  • Serve on college and Division of Student Development collaborative teams and committees as needed

 

Career Education and Outreach

  • Provide individual personal counseling/group counseling on a limited time basis
  • Plan and facilitate career development, planning, and placement programs and presentations based on the needs of students and alumni
  • Develop strong partnerships with academic departments, faculty, staff and employers to provide effective career services
  • Coordinate the internship program including development, tracking/assessment and successful employer partnerships

 

Employer Relations

  • Initiate, develop, and maintain contacts with present and potential employers
  • Develop relationships with employers and their internship/field experience programs

 

Technology and Electronic Career Services

  • Provide leadership and vision for career development technology infrastructure, including management systems, website and other social media
  • Consult with the campus Technology Services Office on current software and hardware available to assist best use of technology for students, alumni and employers

 

Supervision

  • Responsible for hiring, training, and supervision of two full time staff in Career Development

 

Job Qualifications

Necessary Education or Work Experience

  • Master’s Degree in counseling, college student personnel, human resources management or related field with five years of professional experience in career services, higher education setting preferred
  • Career education and outreach experience
  • Demonstrated experience working with students from underrepresented populations in their pursuit of internships and career placement.  Commitment to building an antiracist department.

  • Multicultural Competence – the awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to work with others who are culturally different from self in meaningful, relevant, and productive ways.
