The Communication Studies Department at Edgewood College invites applications for adjunct faculty to teach one or more classes starting August 2018. Courses available for the fall semester include COMMS 100: Introduction to Communication, and COMMS 243: Introduction to Media Studies. COMMS 100 is a college-wide required general education course that provides both conceptual and practical instruction in aspects of interpersonal, group, and mediated communication and public speaking, with a substantial experiential component. COMMS 243 is a required course for COMMS majors, and covers the historical development of mass media in the United States as well as their interplay with and influence on the broader national culture, through a lens of critical analysis.
Teach one or more stand-alone course sections; evaluate student progress and assign grades; meet with students outside of class as needed. Instructors in COMMS 100 use a standardized syllabus, exams, assignments, and activities (with some room for personal adaptation), and participate in periodic instructor meetings under the direction of a tenure-track member of the department. Instructors in courses other than COMMS 100 must adhere to established learning outcomes and may use existing course materials, but function independently.
Master’s degree in Communication required; Ph.D. or work toward it preferred. Must have college-level instructional experience and be competent to teach in the areas of interpersonal, group, organizational, public, intercultural, and/or mediated communication from a transactional perspective. Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching excellence with a focus on student learning through active and applied strategies.
