Madison, Wis. (January 13, 2025) – Edgewood College will be renamed Edgewood University in July of 2025. The announcement comes as the institution approaches its centennial year and continues to expand the reach of its mission as a Catholic college in the Dominican tradition.

“In 2027, we will celebrate 100 years of advancing our mission since our founding by the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa,” President Andrew Manion, said. “As we position the institution to flourish in our second century, the time is right to celebrate by making this change to honor our past, and to embrace the future.”

The Board of Trustees of Edgewood College and the leadership council of the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa have approved the new name, which will take effect July 1, 2025.

Edgewood College has been effectively operating as a university since 1986, when Master of Science and Master of Arts degrees including Business Administration, Education, and Religious Studies were added to the academic portfolio. In 2001 the Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership was added. Since that time the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and the Doctor of Business Administration have been added. The newest doctoral program, the Doctor of Occupational Therapy, will welcome its first cohort of students in fall, 2025.

Institutional partnerships and strategic use of technology are fueling significant enrollment growth. As of 2025, Edgewood College is now home to more than 1,300 graduate students from the U.S. and 37 other countries.

“While our adult and graduate program partnerships are expanding the reach of our mission, make no mistake – our commitment to our traditional, undergraduate students remains steadfast,” President Manion said. “Our students who make their home here on Monroe Street in Madison for four years are living stewards of the mission that we inherit and embrace.”

At the start of the current academic year, the College welcomed nearly 280 new first-year students, marking a 25% increase over the previous year. Student-athletes are a significant proportion of this year’s new student enrollment. In November, the Eagles (who compete in 20 sports at the NCAA Division III level) announced the addition of the Women’s Bowling team, set to begin in 2025-2026. And planning and development continues at the Athletics and Wellness Campus in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. The forty-acre site, located seven miles from the Monroe Street campus, will be the new home for Eagles Athletics.

Edgewood College shares the 55-acre campus on Monroe Street with Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart, and with the Edgewood Campus School. Located in the heart of Madison, the campus takes its name from the ‘Edgewood Villa’ property, which was gifted to the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa by former Wisconsin Governor Cadwallader Washburn in 1881.
